WATER IS A SCARCE AND INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT RESOURCE IN THE WEST, AND VAIL IS NO EXCEPTION.

Vail is located at the foot of the Gore Range and in the headwaters of the Colorado River system. The Colorado River is the largest river in the American Southwest, providing water to 40 million people in seven states and the Republic of Mexico. Not to mention the countless unique ecosystems and aquatic species that call the river system home. As a headwaters community, we have a responsibility to ensure that what flows downstream is clean and abundant.

Vail Snowpack

In Vail, we watch the snowpack very closely. Snow is more than the powder we ride in the winter. It is a reservoir that feeds our rivers and streams all summer long. Snowpack has a bearing on a lot of other environmental factors including stream flows, drinking water availability and wildfire risk.
